Sheriff Tony Chavis Takes Office!

After a little more than a week in office, Sheriff Tony Chavis is settling in as the new sheriff of Darlington County.

Being the son of the late J.W. and Audrey Chavis, the Sheriff was taught hard work and dedication at an early age; and running the County the right way, while working for the people, has always been a dream of his.

Sheriff Chavis comes with years of experience, including Chesterfield County Sheriff deputy and seventeen years of with the S.C. Highway Patrol, (1989-2016), earning numerous leadership and management certifications in law enforcement.  He is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and was a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for more than five years.

With the support of his wife of twenty three years, Denise Chavis, and his family, which includes three children and two grandchildren, he is focused on the future of Darlington County and the safety and protection of every County resident and visitor.

The Sheriff has already committed to the development of a citizens advisory council that will work with the Sheriff’s office to target problem areas in the county, to take place within his first 100 days in office.

“I want the people of Darlington County to have more confidence in the performance and abilities of the Darlington County Sheriff’s office. I want to establish that trust and faith again.” says Chavis.

During a short ceremony held at the County Courthouse on January 1, Senator Gerald Malloy, District 29, swore Sheriff Chavis into office, who in turn swore in his command staff.

“Community support is everything in law enforcement today. We need our communities input so we know where crime is being committed to assist us in building relationships with our community, so everyone knows that the Sheriffs Office and law enforcement in general, is a friend not an enemy,”

While Sheriff Chavis understands his work is cut out for him, he looks forward to the challenge and believes that Darlington County is in the right hands.
